Promo photo for The Island

Wednesday, May 30th, 2012 at 2:00pm

Lantern Theater Company Presents:  The Island

The Island is Robben Island, South Africa's notorious prison, where John and Winston are political prisoners and cellmates. After absurdly grueling days laboring under the sun, they return to their dark cell to rehearse a makeshift performance of Sophocles' play Antigone. Winston takes the part of young Antigone, who defies the laws of the state for the sake of her conscience. John takes the part of Creon, the king, who is so desperate to hold onto power that he will crush any dissent. Rehearsals in the cramped cell will test their friendship and strain their resilience in this gripping, vivid portrait of apartheid-era struggle. Undeniably moving and surprisingly funny, this modern classic by Tony Award-winners Athol Fugard, John Kani, and Winston Ntshona celebrates hope, passion, and the strength of friendship.

Pennsylvania Ballet Presents:  N.Y. Export: Opus Jazz

Feel the flavor of the city that never sleeps with Jerome Robbins' N.Y. Export: Opus Jazz. Robbins' "ballet in sneakers," celebrates the youth and vitality of the era in which it emerged: the distinctly cool 1950's. N.Y. Export: Opus Jazz adopts the spirit of Robbins' renowned musical, West Side Story, with Broadway-style theatricality saturating this series of dances. Also on the bill, Peter Martins' Barber Violin Concerto showcases two couples, bathed in white, performing brilliant pas de deux that exhibit the range between classical ballet and modern dance. Choreographer in Residence Matthew Neenan's much-anticipated 13th commission for the Company completes the program.

Witherspoon will inherit six million dollars if he can successfully go on holiday with his uncle, the late departed croupier, in Monte Carlo for a week. If he doesn't pull it off, the money goes to the Universal Dogs Home of Brooklyn - and if there is one thing in life that Harry hates, it's dogs! With a tuneful score and a well-oiled plot, plus the ultimate happy ending, Lucky Stiff guarantees hilarity for one and all.

Azuka Theatre Presents: Hazard County

When a young producer stumbles into town looking for stories and a fresh start, he believes he's found both in Ruth. Her made-for-TV tale captures his attention - a broke young woman in a rural Kentucky town, unable to access the trust fund set up for her children after her husband's murder. But neither of them has told the other the whole truth, and a past tainted by racism threatens to destroy Ruth's already shaky existence. This story is interspersed with memorable monologues from fans and critics of The Dukes of Hazzard, who blow apart the Southern stereotypes that tend to define Ruth's world.
